Story from Steve Petz.
When I finished high school in 1961, Phil and Elsie invited me to live with them in Hamilton . The intention was that I would get a job to make enough money to pay for my education.
Bill Hnatyshyn got me a very good job at STELCO. Not only did it pay extremely well, I got to operate tractors that could lift and rotate 25-60 ton coils of steel and overhead cranes that lift 25-200 tons. STELCO employed 50,000 people then – 10,000 worked in our mill. It was a lot of noise and commotion for a Ukrainian boy from Shellmouth to adjust to — actually it was a snap and great adventure.
Because of Phil, Elsie, and Bill I was able to get an excellent education in Industrial Management. It was the foundation for an an exciting work life and prosperity for our family.
I know there are many other examples of family members helping others move away and create a successful life for them and their families.
