Story from Steve Petz.
I was a baby when George went to fight in the second world war. I knew nothing of his military service. I don’t even remember when he returned from the war. It must have been a glorious day for Mother, Dad and our family. I never heard any war stories. I do remember that he brought back a German war helmet with a Swastika on it. The last time I saw that helmet, it was in the basement of our house in Shellmouth.
He was not my HERO because of his military service, of which I knew nothing .. He is my HERO because of his personal qualities and his value system. He had very strong family values that continue in their children. I know whenever he came to Shellmouth, I felt I was in the presence of greatest. He remember him as a strong and quiet man.
He cut my hair until I was about 14 – including excellent “brush cuts”. I remember showing him a picture of how I wanted my hair cut. He looked at me as if to say “ I cut hair, I am not a magician.
